What we're really seeking is the end of unhappiness, which is a psychological attitude that manifests as 1. guilt, 2. blame, 3. pride, 4. worry, and 5. expectation.
This unhappiness is the result of believing that 1) people could act any differently than they actually do, and that 2) pleasure completes me/makes me happy, whereas pain is an attack on who I am.
When these beliefs are recognized to be completely inaccurate, unhappiness dissolves, leaving in its place peace of mind regardless of circumstantial pleasure or pain.
